Anthony Garçon's tips and tricks

Article: What suit should I choose for work?

What suit should I choose for work?

The corporate dress code varies widely from one environment to another. Some jobs require a formal suit. Others allow for more casual attire. So, which suit should you choose for work, depending on the professional environment?

How to choose the right business suit?

Looking to your colleagues for inspiration gives you a first idea of the business look that's customary in a company. However, to stand out elegantly without going overboard, choosing the right suit is an art form. Indeed, a man wearing the right work suit exudes confidence and can start each day in style. Anthony Garçon shares his tips for always looking impeccable.

The basis for a professional look

The suit is the first item that comes to mind when it comes to work-appropriate attire. However, there are several clothing combinations to try to match the company's style.

Wear the right material

Regardless of the profession, the seasons have an impact on clothing, and workwear is no exception. Adjusting your outfit to the temperature helps you stay comfortable and work in optimal conditions. In fall and winter, wool and flannel are ideal because they are breathable and thermoregulating. However, for summer, linen is lighter.

The material also contributes greatly to the overall appearance. A suit made of synthetic material can tend to look cheap. It's therefore preferable to turn to natural materials with a super 100 or 110 thread count suitable for professional use for a suit that is less fragile in the long term and less prone to wrinkling.

Adapt your suit according to the job: from formal to casual

The formal look necessarily involves a suit: it's a staple of business attire. For formal environments such as finance or the law, a simple and refined suit is the order of the day. This is the business-attracting style: a plain shirt , a dark jacket with one or two buttons, fitted trousers, and a matching tie .

For business trips and lunches, it is better to opt for the business casual look, or even smart casual for those who have more freedom in their clothing. The pants are chinos or flannel pants , the shirt remains plain or with a discreet stripe, but it is not necessary to limit yourself to white or sky blue or even to wear a tie.

The rules for choosing your costume correctly

Finding the right accessory, matching your suit to your shoes, taking care of it... Suits need to be maintained and reused. Choosing them carefully allows you to wear them with different combinations, for different occasions.

Matching the right colors and patterns for your costume

In a professional setting, it's advisable to opt for a sober suit. A navy or gray suit has the advantage of being able to work with all shirts and shoes. As for patterns, it's better to choose something discreet for very formal jobs, such as the Prince of Wales pattern. You can also choose a semi-plain suit.

Tips for preserving your work suit

To preserve your suit over time, it is recommended to rotate it and not wear it more than once or twice a week. It is important to remove your jacket once seated at your desk to avoid rubbing on your elbows. At home, the suit should be hung on a hanger, regularly dusted and aired, then stored in a dry place, ideally in its protective cover. As for cleaning, the suit can be taken to the dry cleaners. But be careful, no more than two or three times a year, otherwise it may be damaged.
